Immigration in Rogers Park

The new president has promised an aggressive anti-immigrant agenda and stated that Chicago will be one of the first cities targeted. Rogers Park is home to many immigrants - both documented and undocumented. Rogers Park is a strong community, and our diversity makes us strong and able to withstand hateful attacks.

UCRP views all people as part of God’s family. We stand protecting our immigrant neighbors.

What are the differences between ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] and Customs and Border Protection [CBP]
They are part of the Department of Homeland Security, the key difference is that
CBP primarily focuses on enforcing immigration and customs laws at the US borders,
while ICE is responsible for enforcing immigration laws within the interior of the United States, including investigations, arrests, detention, and removal operations.
Both of these departments are within the Chicagoland area.

ICE needs a warrant to enter one’s home

The Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution
protects people from unreasonable searches and seizures by the government.
Customs and Border Protection [CBP] whose tasked with patrolling the U.S. border and areas that function like a border, claims a territorial reach much larger than you might imagine. A federal law says that, without a warrant, CBP can board vehicles and vessels and search for people without immigration documentation “within a reasonable distance from any external boundary of the United States.” These “external boundaries” include international land borders but also the entire U.S. coastline.

However, nearly 2 out of 3 people live within 100 miles of the U.S. border. That means the CBP does not view Lake Michigan is within the U.S. border and therefore all of Chicagoland is within this NO Fourth Amendment meaning they can put up roadblocks and/or check people on the street.
